The (Almost) Pain-Free Guide to Having the I Quit Conversation With Your Boss

The (Almost) Pain-Free Guide to Having the I Quit Conversation With Your Boss Are you thinking about quitting your job and what you have to do next seems quite scary?Well, you are not alone. A large number of people experience similar anxiety when deciding if, when, and how to leave their current employers even when the reasons for leaving are quite apparent. You could be leaving because you no longer are satisfied with your job and every day you show up at the office is hell.Maybe you want to take a break from working, take some time to reflect upon your life and change a few things, or it could be just plain old poor remuneration.Whatever reason you have to leave your job, remember you will be leaving a permanent impression of yourself.IT’S NEVER EASYIt really doesn’t matter if you have been working in that firm for 6 months or 10 years, leaving can be difficult because over that time, you may have most probably built strong ties with co-workers.Trust me, quitting your job can have similar stress levels to those associated with ending a long-term romantic relationship or leaving home for college in another city for an adolescent. You definitely cannot just walk up to your supervisor’s office and announce, “Hey boss, I quit!”It could get quite emotional if you do not know how to handle it.Some employees have shed tears when trying to tell their managers that they are leaving the organization. For others, it has got extremely gruesome.Earlier this year, a female employee quit her job using 33 whiteboard messages. The messages took off with a sarcastic “Happy Monday Everybody” quickly followed by “I quit!” She went on to highlight a couple issues about her coworkers that she thought needed let off her chest. Her boss took the cue and responded in kind, creating one of the most dramatic exit stories ever.Another employee in June this year resigned with a condolence letter mockingly signed out “So very sorry for your loss!”The fear of what’s going to happen next, terror over what to say, guilt and the obvious excitement brought about by the prospects of change greatly influence how an employee approaches their exit conversation.Once in a while, there is the pride of moving to greener pastures and a deceitful gloat that you might not want to wear.Whether you are elated to be leaving the job or sad, this conversation will not always be easy. There is a lot of advice out there detailing the basic of the “I quit” conversation. In this article, let’s take a look at how to have a (almost) pain free “I quit” conversation with your boss to ensure you leave your old job and your previous colleagues without burning bridges.1. PLAN AHEADQuitting is more often than not a long-term process rather than a five-minute decision. If you are thinking of how to have this conversation with your boss, it means you have pondered on it for some while now.HR Consultant Liz Ryan in her career reinvigoration book Reinvention Map: Break the Rules to Get the Job You Want and Career You Deserve, offers very useful steps that we recommend you must take before walking into that conversation with your boss. These include:Do not resign until you have confirmed with your next employer of a place in their company. Make sure that you have it in writing and that the starting dates, the salary, schedule and other relevant details have been confirmed. Before you commit to quitting, think about why you are dissatisfied currently and if this is a decision you will not regret making.Remember the reasons why you took this job and write them down. Also, write down the reasons why you are leaving. These will be important in the meeting.Write down what you will say to your boss during the meeting. Keep this short so that you do not take too much time.Schedule a meeting with your boss or manager and ensure that they have time to attend to you. If they are too busy to take a meeting make a call.2. NOTICEEvery company has its own procedures for giving resignation notices. There are some that require a two-week notice pe riod while others may require you to give notice by up to even two months. If you are in a senior managerial position, your boss might require a longer notice period for you.Consult your company’s polices so that you can familiarize with the requirements of resigning. It is universally advisable that employees consider writing a letter of resignation, which is a standard Human Resources practice required by most companies. The resignation letter will serve as documentation for your departure.Be sure to keep the letter short and to the point. You should try to think of your resignation letter as a thank you note. Your notice should include the following:The date of your last day of workAppreciation for the chance to work in the organizationYour future endeavors (If you are comfortable to reveal).Details of accrued leave days and holidaysMake sure that you give your resignation letter to your manager or supervisor in person. An employee, however, is under no obligation to hand in a noti ce unless they are bounded by an employment contract that details it as mandatory. There are other situations where you might not be able to give a notice as stipulated. These might include during emergency situations or when your new employer requires you to begin immediately.During such scenarios, accrued leave days, holidays and unpaid overtime could be factored in to the notice period calculation. This is, however, dependent on your employer’s regulations.3. FACE-TO-FACE IS BESTCareer advisor Robert Half advises that face-to-face communication is the most powerful way of dealing with workplace encounters.Your boss will be more likely to accept your resignation positively if you do it in person. It also shows respect and goodwill when you quit orally rather than when you do it on the phone or e-mail.Face to face communication also goes a long way to reveal your character. If you speak to your boss in person, it shows that you have nothing to hide and this will clear any suspicion t hat he or she might have about your exit from the company.4. THE REASON FOR LEAVINGAs I mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are several reasons that can lead you to want to leave your current employer, including being plain fed up with the organizational culture or having an overbearing boss. You will, nevertheless, be committing a serious career mistake if you say something insensitive and use the wrong words, such as what the ‘whiteboard employee’ mentioned above chose to use. You should avoid giving reasons like:“You are not paying me enough money”“I got a better job in another firm”“You take me for granted “ … and so on.Instead of being all resentful during your last days, HR manager advise showing appreciation and trying to say something positive about your experience with the organization. You could give a brief explanation of what you have learnt working in the company. Explain the growth and achievements that you have gained at the company. Some of the reasons you could give for leaving should revolve around the following:That your values no longer align with the companyYou would want additional compensationYou are seeking a new challengeYou want to go back to schoolYou have decided to work in another industry etc.By all means do not bluff about leaving as a way to get a pay increase.Personal finance writer Laura Shin cautions that when you arm-twist your employer in this manner to get a raise, they will be testing your limits and soon you could be on your way out. You will be viewed with suspicion and considered untrustworthy.Another reason you could give is the need for change. You could make the non-antagonistic argument that you intend to use the time to reflect on yourself and analyze your personal growth. After giving your reasons for leaving, show your willingness in helping with the transition during your notice. You do not have to say many things and overpromise what you cannot deliver, but show that you want to leave everything ready for the next person.5. WHERE ARE YOU GOING?Once you tell your boss that you want to leave, there is a high chance that he or she will ask you where you are going. In such situations, honesty, as they say, is the best policy â€" in most scenarios. If you choose to delve into the details of your next move, it is advisable to be brief to avoid sounding overly enthusiastic about leaving your current employer. This is especially important if you are moving to a direct competitor. If there is a reason that you cannot be honest about where you are going â€" maybe because you haven’t accepted the job yet or are moving to a competitor, then you could say that you are still considering your options.Your best bet is to assess the situation of the leadership and the temperament of the supervisor before disclosing these details. You should ask yourself whether disclosing where you are going next serves your future relations with the company or not.We advise you always choose an h onest answer unless you think it will be counterproductive.6. TRANSITION PLANIt is prudent to inform your boss of your transition plan during your notice. Your two weeks’ notice is most probably the time to ensure that you have left everything in order.Your boss is mostly worried about who and how to transfer your responsibilities. You could be tempted to take it easy during this time but as career coach, Kunal Dutta, cautions that your behavior during this time, is your legacy.Make it clear to your boss that you are ready and willing to take whatever appropriate action that will make the transition smoother. Some of the things that need to be done during the transition period include:Finish up any pending work that you have so that you do not overburden your successor. If for any reason you are unable to complete your pending work, ensure you have a list of the tasks. You could also create a list of recommendations on how the work can be completed and how other departments within the organization will play their roles in the accomplishment. In some cases, you might be required to stick around and orient your successor so as to have an easy transition.Remove your personal items and clear your desk in time for your new successor.Ensure you have confirmed with your manager what you can and cannot take from the office.Consider the feelings of your coworkers with whom you are about to lose a working relationship. Remember that not all of them are happy about your leaving. Some of them are jealous while others are just curious. Make conversations with them and ensure you do not have any bad blood before you leave.7. DEALING WITH THE REACTIONA national survey conducted by Harvard Business Review involving 700 senior leaders examined what is the right way to have quit your job.Sixteen percent of the respondents reported an interesting consideration they didn’t have in mind that while resigning from their jobs â€" being fired on the spot.Once you notify your boss about your intention to leave, they will not always welcome the information with open hands. Sometimes, it might raise negative feelings in your boss. You do not know how your boss will react to the news of your leaving. As we have seen, you might even get fired immediately. If you have told your boss that you are leaving for a competitor, then your resignation could turn out to be a termination. Most of the senior leaders in the survey reported that most employees who leave them for a competitor will most likely get terminated. One of the reasons behind this strong reaction could be the fear of losing company secrets.Nevertheless, be honest if you are leaving for a competitor as this will not reflect well on you once they figure out the truth in the long run.Remember you might work with your former company in another situation.Tell your current employer that you are aware of the obligations that you have to them and that you have cleared this conflict with your next employer. You will also n eed to avoid being under suspicion that you might carry sensitive information, valuable data or client information with you to your next employer. You might not want to transfer information or carry it unless you have confirmed with your HR manager. Do not delete any files because it can look fishy under forensic examination. You Could Also Be Met With a CounterofferThere are other cases in which your employer might be keen on keeping you, in which case they might hit you with a counteroffer once you tell them about your decision to leave. Have this in mind when going into his office.Your boss’s counteroffer might include a better salary, improved working conditions, or even a promotion. While the offer might be tempting, remember the reasons why you decided to quit in the first place.Remember if you stay, you will be forfeiting your career and personal development, so think about the different offers and consider if they are worth it.Research shows that counteroffers might be overly tempting, and many employees have reconsidered quitting when the offer is on the table.Nonetheless, career advisors warn employees of the risks that come with staying, which most likely outweigh the benefits.Be honest with yourself and with your employer and tell them why the change is necessary for you.Tell him that even though you loved your job and the skills gained are irrefutable, you are ready and excited to move on to other endeavors. If your boss is concerned about your progress, he will easily let you go.You Might Be Asked for an Exit InterviewYour resignation process might include an exit interview. While some companies will not ask you for one, some might and you need to be prepared for it.The exit interview will include some of the issues that we have discussed in this article. Common questions will include:Why are you leaving? Apart from the reasons that you have given, your employer will be interested to know what shortcomings the company might have, which led to your r esignation. One of the goals of an organization is to improve employee retention, and your answer could point to a managerial issue that needs to be addressed.Do you think you did your job well? Your employer will want to know how competent the employees feel. He or she will want to know if the training and resources they allocated were adequate for your role. How was your relationship with your manager and coworkers? Relationships between superiors and subordinates are critical to the functioning of a firm. Your boss is interested in your assessment of the managerial style used in the company and if its efficient. He also wants to learn how employees view their managers. You could have a list of suggestions of what could be improved but do not complain. What did you like about your job? The purpose of the exit interview is to get constructive feedback, and your employer would like to know what aspects of your career brought you joy. Talk about the duty you were assigned, the flex hou rs, your relationship with coworkers, and anything else you found useful. What skills do you think your successor will need? You are the best person to give insights on how best to perform your role. Your employer will be keen on how best to replace you so that the rest of the company can have a smooth transition as well as your successor.8. END ON A HIGH NOTEYou should try to be as positive as possible.Do not burn bridges as other employees have done before. When talking with your boss, focus on the positive and tell them about the benefits you have acquired working for the company.Ask your boss if they are willing to give you a reference and recommendation letter. If they are okay with it, you could ask them to write the recommendation on your LinkedIn profile which will help with your next job and future endeavors.Your future employer will most likely contact your former employer or HR department about your work ethic. If you burn bridges while leaving your job, you will be greatly r educing chances of your former employer saying positive things about you.Do not forget to say goodbye. Before leaving, ensure you send a farewell message to your boss and to your coworkers and let them know of your future plans if possible.Make sure you keep their contacts because you will need them in future.Give them your contacts also so that they can also communicate with you.Remember, they were not just employees but your friends and the family you had established while working there.THINGS TO CONSIDERFailing to RehearseAs already discussed in the prior parts of this article, you need to plan ahead for the conversation you have with your job. Many employees forget to rehearse the conversation that they will have especially the part about the reason for leaving.Without rehearsing the conversation, you can easily find yourself tongue tied once your boss asks some questions. The inability to effectively express yourself could lead to a misunderstanding and burn bridges between you a nd your former company. The study by Harvard Business Review advises employees to consult their personal advisors so as to get a chance to walk through the prepared conversation.Imagine your advisor is your boss and role-play the speech you have just to be sure of how it sounds before going to your boss.Your mentor will highlight the parts where you could change or add some few details.Things such as the length of the meeting can be determined in this rehearsal as well as the reaction you would get from your boss.Being Myopic About the Effects of Your DepartureOften, employees fail to contextualize the impact of their departure from their companies.Your decision to quit will have ripple effects on the entire organization seeing that the organization runs as a whole unit. There are two concerns that you might want to consider. One is the timing of your departure. When thinking about timing, assess the broader context within which your departure and its disruption on processes such as bu dgeting, compliance activities, and strategy formulation. The other is the relationship you have with your co-workers.The people that you will be leaving will be ultimately affected by your departure. The list of employees that will be affected is long including peers, superiors, mentors, mentees, clients, industry observers and many others. These two have been cited by many employers and employees as critical in ensuring that you leave without burning any bridges.WRAPPING UPWhile letting your boss know about your decision to quit your job can be an anxiety-inducing experience, it need not be so, and most importantly, it should be done tactfully so as not to create bad blood between you and your former boss.Fortunately, the tips shared in this article will help you make the “I quit” conversation with your boss as painless as possible.

Lord of the Flies Essay - 1446 Words

INTELLIGENCE, CIVILIZATION, AND INSTINCTS nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Often times, authors use characters in their novels and stories as symbols. The characters may be symbolic of the tangible as well as the non-tangible. In addition, characters can often be looked at with a psychological approach to literature in order to better determine or understand their symbolic significance. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, special symbolic significance may be found in the characters, Piggy, Ralph, and Jack. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Piggy, the heavy, asthmatic, nearsighted boy, was often teased and ridiculed, however Golding made it obvious to the reader that Piggy was indeed the super ego. Piggy symbolizes all the hate and†¦show more content†¦Then after a brief argument with Jack, he continued: â€Å"--and them little ‘uns was wandering about down there where the fire is. How d’you know they aren’t still there?† Piggy stood up and pointed to the smoke and flames. A murmur rose among the boys and died away. Something strange was happening to Piggy, for he was gasping for breath. â€Å"That little ‘un—â€Å" gasped Piggy—â€Å"him with the mark on his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?† The crowd was as silent as death (Golding 46). When Piggy finally was given a chance to speak, he pointed out everything the boys on the island had been doing wrong, like a father lecturing his child. If Piggy was made chief, things may have been different and none of these negative effects would have struck the island. All of this shows how Piggy symbolizes prejudice, intelligence, and a father-like figure to the boys on the island. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Ralph, who was made chief, transformed the island from a barbarity to a civilized society. He represents civilization. Ralph was the chief, or leader. He was the head of all civilized society on the island. He was constantly concerned with rules, and was extremely articulate on how he wanted things ran. He demonstrated this in an argument with Jack: â€Å"There was a ship. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!† He took a step toward Jack, who turned and faced him. â€Å"They might have seen us. Go for It With Pa’lante

Palante is not a word you will find in any standard Spanish dictionaries. Spanish teachers might even cringe upon hearing it. It is a Spanish slang word loosely translated as onward, go ahead, or go for it. Where Pa’lante Comes From Palante  is a well-understood  slang  word apparently originally used in Caribbean Spanish-speaking areas and seems to be gaining popularity in other parts of the Spanish-speaking world. Its a shortened version of para  adelante, a fairly common phrase made up of the  preposition  para, often meaning for, and  adelante, an  adverb  (sometimes functioning as other  parts of speech) meaning forward. What is unique about this word and its use is that  contractions and  apostrophes  are rarely used in Spanish. In fact, using apostrophes to indicate letters are missing is usually thought of as an Anglicism. For some inexplicable reason, palante is sometimes spelled as palante and is listed that way as slang in the Collins Spanish Dictionary. But the spelling of palante is far more common. It is not listed in the Royal Spanish Academy Dictionary (known as DRAE for its Spanish initials), the languages most authoritative reference source. Famous Word at Rallies Palante is something commonly heard at rallies usually used to rile up a person or group to action. As evidence of its burgeoning spread outside of the Caribbean, the word was used as part of a slogan at pro-Hugo Chà ¡vez rallies in Caracas, Venezuela:  ¡Palante Comandante!  Chà ¡vez was the president of Venezuela from 2002 to 2013. A literal translation of the rhyming phrase  ¡Palante Comandante!, would be something like Forward, Commander! although that direct interpretation does not capture the subtle connotation nor the colloquial nature of the phrase. El  CotVmandante  was a popular reference to Chà ¡vez. In the context of rallies, other translations of palante might be go ahead, onward, go for it, hang in there or keep on going. Pop Culture References Pop icon and Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin brought the word mainstream in his 1995 musical hit,  Marà a. A popular line from the song: Un, dos, tres, un pasito palante Maria! The line translates to, One, two, three, one little step forward, Maria!  The song topped the charts at the time and became Martins first international hit single. Before and after Martin, Spanish music artists have been using the slang word in music hits. Other famous titles with the word include Echa  Palante, by  Mexican recording artist, Thalia, made popular in 1997. The song was featured in the 1998 dance competition movie Dance with Me in a memorable scene starring  Vanessa L. Williams  and  Puerto Rican  singer  Chayanne. As an example of the words use in song prior to Martin, Puerto Rican-American Latin jazz great, Tito Puente released a song, Palante, which he subtitled Straight in English.   Palante con Cristina (Palante With Cristina) is a popular show on Telemundo, a U.S. cable TV network. Related Phrases One related phrase that is widespread is echado para adelante. The sentence Estamos echados para adelante can mean something like, Were all ready to go for it. Sometimes echado para adelante is shortened to something like echao padelante. These phrases are not considered formal Spanish, but would most likely be used in the context of colloquial speech or familiar conversation.   Palante in Names of Programs or Groups Palante has become word often used in the names of organizations on programs to help convey they idea of progress. TEACHER PROFESSIONALISM Teacher professionalism is acting with integrity inside and outside the classroom. This involves understanding and acting upon responsibilities that a teacher has to the subject matter, learners, and community as a whole. Professionalism in this manner engage in behaviors that support learning and teaching, facilitate open communication within the classroom and the culture of the school and being proactive. A professional teacher should demonstrate respect for learners, faculty and staff as all those qualities are important in the school environment. Accepting diversity in the workplace will add value to profession which include accepting the strengths and weakness of every individual and focusing on working together as a team to identify and achieve individual and community goals and outcomes to work towards. Kramer (2013) contends the most critical elements of teacher professionalism can be classified into three categories; which are attitudes, behavior, and communication. These categories cover a wide range of behaviors and characteristics that should be demonstrated in the professional lives of educators, from being on time and dressing formally to understanding learning theories to clearly communicating with their colleagues, parents and learners. Major aspects of professional teacher is to reflect a good character in the workplace, have commitment to change continuous improvements towards learning and teaching, have knowledge of the subject he/she is teaching as this will make it easy for learners to attain outcomes that are designed for the lesson, pedagogical knowledge and obligations, and have a good working relationship beyond classroom. INTERVIEW TO DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL TEACHING FRAMEWORK Teacher 1 Indicators of Professional Knowledge Know their content and how to teach that content to their students understand  curriculum documents, policies and programs associated with the content they teach The educator must be up to date with new information about his/her subjects and know how to elaborate that information effective where his learners will understand it in easy way. Where the learners can be effective in a classroom. Indicators of Professional Practice Use a range of strategies, technologies, activities and resources to engage students in their learning The educator can use the different strategy and resources for learners to understand and to create effective classroom management. If learners understand the strategy the educator use there is no use for educator can change the strategy. Every educator have own methods or strategy for his/her own lesson now every subject have different needs of activities that educator can use. Indicators of Professional Relationships Communicate effectively with students Educator must have self-respect and we will be sure that educator will treat the learners with respect and honors the regulations and the policies of the educator and learners. If the educator can first respect learners and make ground rule that are followed the class will run smooth and we will call that professional relationship between educator and learners because they achieve the purpose of the day within the limited time they are given. Indicators of Professional Attributes Are passionate and committed to teaching and learning Lots of educators have passion for teaching and learning nowadays educators take their time that they must spend with their family and use it to the matric learners during the recess period. Other educator continue their studies or develop themselves to be equipped educators that’s passion for teaching and learning. What are challenging about being professional The challenge we have as educator we need time for our families the educator become addicted to the learners now when they are at home they become tight and they don’t get time to relax with their family in other words we can say they start forget about their families or neglect your family because educator start to enjoy in h/her work or learners. Teacher 2 Indicators of Professional Knowledge Program  to meet a range of  individual needs and abilities The overcrowding and the number of classes educator teach makes educator suffer to know learners individual needs even though educator know his learners he/she need time because of the classes that need to be attended to. Indicators of Professional Practice Provide a learning environment that encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning The education nowadays is learner centered learning that means learners take more part in classroom now the educator is there to provide media and strategies for smooth learning and create environment that will suit all learners within classroom and make sure that every learner is satisfied or change the attitude towards what they were treating in that class. Indicators of Professional Relationships Work cooperatively with colleagues to support teaching and learning The relationship between educators must of caring and team work if educator have good relationship the results of school will never drop because the educator respect their duty and there will be a progress between educators and learners now learners will take their duty serious duties like homework and school attendance because they will feel left out when they don’t do school work. Indicators of Professional Attributes Display ethical behavior and responsibility Ethics education should aim to promote students’ maturity across a broad spectrum of moral functioning, including moral reasoning, moral affect and moral behavior. To identify the most effective strategy for promoting the comprehensive moral maturity of high school students, we enrolled students in one of four groups: an introductory ethics class, a blended economicsethics class, a role?model ethics class taught by graduate students and a non?ethics comparison class What are challenging about being professional Learner late coming, disrespectful and absenteeism in school clearly this affect the professionalism educator want to apply in the learner s and it will affect the school result and fails the learners their right to school. Findings Educator must be up to date with subject matter because nowadays education is developing every day now educator need to develop themselves to have more information about the subject needs and know how to make the subject easy for the student because we can’t give learner everything that came from textbook we can give learner practical for them to understand clearly. Other educator are professional but the overcrowding of learners and the classes that educator must teach he/she end up not getting time for learners who need individual time. Most of learners need special time but the time the educator is given that can’t cover for the whole learners needs. Now our government need to restructure the rall and the educator because the educator and learners they don’t get more time for themselves. Every educator have his/her own strategy of teaching the learners but if educator have good strategy he/she can use if it works for his learners. More strategy must be in place for educator to use because single strategy can’t work for the whole semester other topic need different teaching strategy educator need to reflect his/her work. Nowadays teaching and learning is centered in learners than in educator more work is done by learners now if learners absent themselves they will have problem to learn. Educator further their studies to have more knowledge about the subject or other is for management purpose that show the committed of educator in their work or responsibility but your will find the parents not motivating their children to do school work even though they have absent themselves in school they don’t edge them to attend school in the following day. There are few school who value team work in many schools you will find that every educator is on its own but within single school even though they have subject meeting everyone have own strategy that he/she use now schools like that they dint have good communication and it end up affecting learners results because the educator doesn’t care about learners but themselves, but school that have team work you will see their learners buy loving school and their results. The learners’ behaviors plays and important role in the educator’s professionalism there are school that learners are disrespectful, absents and late comers in school that is the main problem because there is nothing educator can do the only thing left the school is parental support for school to survive. In conclusion; the ground work of an educated society relies on the teacher who daily interact with learners from early childhood to teenagers, it is important to comprehend what it means to be a professional educator. Educators plays major roles in the learner’s life because they work as social workers, advisor, developer and so many things. In most cases teachers understand how children learn and making teaching decisions based on that knowledge. They work so hard to help children who have learning barriers to understand the content by creating enough time to explain the lesson in a better way and even making more demonstrations that can give those learners a clear understanding of the content. Education system in South Africa needs professional educators who will improve their skills and knowledge to bring changes in the school environment or in classrooms. In our findings, as we take a close look at the teachers’ responses reveals conclusions that are very interesting and raises several questions for further investigation. Finally, the results of this assignment indicate the importance of communicating what it means to be a professional educator to a wider community. REFERENCENCE E. Dreams Essays (551 words) - Neuroscience, Nervous System, Psychology

Dreams "I don't use drugs, my dreams are frightening enough." (Escher) Why do we dream? Are they instructions from the spiritual world or just deep, hidden wishes that can be used to unlock the secrets of the unconscious mind? Nobody knows for sure. One theory that is prevalent today is that dreams result from the physiological "exercise" of the synapses of the brain. There is no proven fact on why we dream, which is why there are so many theories on the topic. There is Freud's theory that dreams carry our hidden desires and Jung's theory that dreams carry meaning, although not always of desire, and that the dreamer can interpret these dreams. After these theories, others continued such as the Cayce theory in that dreams are our bodies means of building up of the mental, spiritual and physical well being. Finally came the argument between Evans' theory and the Crick and Mitchinson theory. Evans states that dreaming is our bodies way of storing the vast array of information gained during the day, whereas Crick and Mitchinson say that this information is being dumped rather than stored. Whichever theory is true, we may never know, but from these following theories we can decide for ourselves what we believe to be true and further help us into understanding our dreams. My own personal theory on why we dream is that the subconscious mind is always working. This results in dreams. The subconscious mind in an attempt to file away all of the information from the previous day results in dreams. A dream in my opinion is nothing more than a chemical reaction in the brain. In laboratory tests, when people were awaked during the RAPID EYE MOVEMENT (REM) stage of sleep and asked to report what was on their mind just before awaking, about 90% reported an experience termed TRUE DREAM. When a true dream is experienced is seems as if it were an actual event rather than one thought or imagined. True dreams often involve a series of such experiences woven together in a somewhat bizarre story. Even those people who claimed to rarely dream or only remember fragments of dreams in the mornings were able to give detailed accounts of a true dream experience when awakened during REM sleep. Those who were awakened during SLOW-WAVE sleep (the deeper, less mentally active stages of sleep) reported mental activity in only about 60% of cases. Usually, this activity lacked the vivid sensory and motor hallucinations of true dreams. This type of mental activity is called SLEEP THOUGHT, and usually pertains to what the person had been thinking about most of the day. However this thought is usually much less productive than that of conscious thoughts (while the person is awake). Those who believe that we dream due to the brain's regular exercise of groups of neurons cite evidence that synapses can degenerate if they go too long without being active; this neural activity during REM sleep helps to preserve important neural pathways. When neurons in the motor and perceptual regions of the brain are exercised in this manner, the inevitable side-effect are the dreams we experience. The increased mental thought activity is due to the sleep thought being engaged in trying to make sense of these movements and hallucinations.

Ihrm Reflects the Interest of Hr Managers Who May Seek to Promote Their Own Interests Rather Than the Needs of Organisations. Essay Example

Ihrm Reflects the Interest of Hr Managers Who May Seek to Promote Their Own Interests Rather Than the Needs of Organisations. Essay Example Ihrm Reflects the Interest of Hr Managers Who May Seek to Promote Their Own Interests Rather Than the Needs of Organisations. Essay Ihrm Reflects the Interest of Hr Managers Who May Seek to Promote Their Own Interests Rather Than the Needs of Organisations. Essay Report Question: IHRM reflects the interest of HR managers who may seek to promote their own interests rather than the needs of organisations. Nowadays, many people might think that International Human Resource Management (IHRM) is synonymous with expatriate management. However, IHRM covers more than just the management of expatriates. According to Laurent (1986, pp. 91-93), IHRM is a set of activities aimed managing organisational human resources at international level to achieve organisational goals and achieve competitive advantage over competitors at national and international level. IHRM includes typical HRM functions such as human resource planning, recruitment, selection, placement, training and development, performance appraisal and compensation at international level and additional activities such as global skills management, expatriate management and so on. According to Scullion (1995, pp352-353), IHRM has become more important in recent years for a number of reasons. First, global activities and global competitions has been increasing rapidly. As the Multinational Companies increase in number and influence, the role of IHRM in those companies grows in significance. Secondly, the effectiveness of International Human Resource Management is now recognised as a major determinant and key source of success or failure in international business. Dowling, Festing and Engle (2008, pp. 9) state that International business has more competitive advantage if they have successful management, and there has been consistent evidence to suggest that business failures in the international arena are often linked to poor management of human resources. Besides, the nature of IHRM has grown more complex over the years. Managing people from different backgrounds and cultures in a global environment presents and encounters many challenges. IHRM is highly dynamic and constantly evolving. It involves the same activities and dimensions as domestic HRM but operates on a much larger scale. There is more internal and external influence in IHRM. According to Dennis and Randall (2004, pp. 22-25), there are huge differences between domestic HRM and International HRM (IHRM). Firstly, domestic HRM is concerned with managing employees  belong  to one nation and IHRM is concerned with anaging  employees  belong to many nations including host-country, parent country and third country employees. Languages and jargons become communication barriers in IHRM. Secondly, domestic HRM is concerned with managing limited number of HRM activities at national level and IHRM has concerned with managing additional activities such as global skills and expatriate  management. Lastly, domestic HRM is less complicated due to less influence from the external  environment. IHRM is very complicated as it is affected heavily by external factors such as cultural distance and institutional factors. All the evidences show that IHRM is more complicated than domestic HRM, as a result, there is higher level of risks and more influence into employees’ lives and family situation. One of the biggest issues is IHRM reflects the interest of HR managers who may seek to promote their own interests rather than the needs of organisations. Firstly, Dowling, Festing and Engle (2008, pp. 5) stress that, One of the key features of IHRM as distinct from domestic HRM are expatriates (an ‘employee who is working and temporarily residing in a foreign country). † This statement reflects the uncertainty of employee’s position and duty in IHRM. Due to the differences between domestic HRM and IHRM, when HR managers work in an international organisation, they will realize the uncertainty of their job where they might encounter great difficulties in managin g employees, that came from different nations, gender and mixed workforce. In order to secure their job, according to Steven, Mara and Tony (2010, pp. 44-46) HR manager tend to promote their personal interests but neglect the needs of organisations. Secondly, according to Mark, peter and Rae (2012, pp. 416-428), â€Å"The employment relations climate of an organisation has considerable impact on employees’ performance. † It shows evidence that poor employment relations may also affect HR managers’ motivation and morale. Poor employment relation and conflict may lead to low productivity, failure in promoting and achieve organisational needs. HR managers focus on their own interest rather than the needs of organisations. Thirdly, when HR managers working and temporarily residing in a foreign country, they are unfamiliar with the new environment, they are lack of information about the organisation’s objectives, background and needs. HR managers found that it is difficult to achieve organisation goals. Lastly, organisation have poor performance management will also lead to HR managers ignored the organisation’s needs. HR managers did not get enough standard to follow. In order to improve these situations, there are several methods that organisation can do to solve and prevent HR managers tend to promote their own interests rather than the needs of organisations in IHRM. Steven, Mara and Tony (2010, pp. 363-365) indicate that a better workspace design such as cloister employees into team spaces can improve workplace communication. A better communication channel at workplace can reduce uncertainty at work, especially in IHRM, employees are from different nations, these can encourage sufficient interaction between HR managers and their colleagues. Less uncertainty in workplace, HR managers are more willing to achieve the needs of organisations. Secondly, according to Mark, peter and Rae (2012, pp. 209-222), organisation can improve employment relations by setting up trade unions, giving HR managers and employees a channel to express their opinions and negotiations. In IHRM, some of the headquarters and Branch Company of international business are not in the same country, trade unions can make the communication easier. Organisation should also give feedback to them. Better employment relations can improve employees’ productivity and achieve better performances. Thirdly, organisation should provide enough information of organisational structure, background, objectives, standards and expectations to HR managers. Provide clear guidelines can avoid confusion. In addition, according to Raymond and Colin (2009, pp. 2-8), organisation can also provide training when they recruit new HR managers or new placement. Lastly, organisation should improve performance management, appropriate management can improve HR managers performance and increase motivation. Besides, organisation can match the employee interest to job tasks to achieve higher performances. Listen to managers opinion and discuss objectives together can also achieve higher performance. In conclusion, HR managers tend to promote their own interests rather than the needs of organisations in IHRM because of uncertainty, poor employment relations, lack of organisations’ support and information and poor performance management. It is hard to say those entire problems are because of HR managers, both HR managers and organisations are responsible for the problem. HR managers and organisations should work together to overcome those problems in achieving the needs of organisations. People have become overly dependent on technology Essay

People have become overly dependent on technology - Essay Example Technology can be defined as human innovation that develops systems and applications to meet human needs, to increase the quality of life or to solve problems. To see the impact of technology in the life of an average American, one only has to put himself in the shoes of an average American. Whether you are a student or an adult, you wake up when the digital alarm clock rings, you catch the latest news on television while eating your breakfast, you type documents using your computer, you visit social networking sites to keep in touch with family and friends and when you come home, you rely on the Internet to play online games or to watch your favorite videos. This clearly shows our over dependence on technology. A recent Harris Poll from Harris Interactive reveals that nearly 65% or two-thirds of Americans think that today’s society is very dependent upon electronic gadgets. Despite doubts about technology’s role in increasing personal productivity, the majority of Amer ican consumers is of the opinion that technology will play an important role in the nation’s recovery from financial crisis and in assuring the continued prosperity of the nation. The information was gleaned from an online. If we just stop and reflect how technology has influenced our lives and how we have become so dependent on technology, then we realize that we cannot live without it. With the advent if e-mail and social networking sites, there are no more letters in our mailbox. ... With so many online games and video games, there are fewer children playing outside. Whatever happened to the times when people walked to the stores to buy newspapers, when children played football in the park or when fitness buffs jogged? Instead of finding them in these places, one has to look indoors to find children, teenagers and adults with either a mouse or controller in their hands or on tread mills to exercise. We have become slaves to our technology. Of all the technological innovations, it is perhaps the computer that has the greatest impact on human beings. Computers have found their way into almost every aspect of our lives. They enable us to work from anywhere and keep in touch with family and friends especially those who live far away. They provide us with entertainment, allow us to chat and perform many other functions. Computers with internet connections have made the world a â€Å"global community†. All this is only possible with advanced technology that is m aking us more dependent on its usage. Technology has also helped to increase workplace efficiency. People depend on technology such as phones, computers, fax machines and printers. Imagine an office without such technology. Work will be done at a snail’s pace and there are bound to be errors. Today, even businesses rely on technology. E-commerce, that is the ability to do business globally via websites, has provided a larger market. Businesses are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a Sebastian 3 week. Technology has enabled people to do online shopping from the comforts of their homes. The Internet, cell phones and other technological may have contributed

Conflicts of the Twentieth Century Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Conflicts of the Twentieth Century - Essay Example Through World War I, World War II, and the Cold War, the nations of Germany and Japan played critical roles. In the years before World War I, Germany's nationalism reached full tilt. The Germans were proud of their empire, military, and industry. They were keen to defend their empire against others, especially the British, who were shocked to find Germany's industrial output topping their own. In 1905 and 1911, competition for colonies brought France and Germany to the brink of war. Diplomacy prevented the outbreak of war then, but Germany did gain some territory in central Africa (Blum, Cameron, and Barnes, 1970, 320). Militarism in Germany also helped drive the world closer to war. The public viewed war with romantic eyes, and the notion of Social Darwinism suggested that, if a nation could become powerful enough to take what it wanted, then it ought to have it. As nations spent more and more money to create grand fighting machines, it must have seemed almost a shame to them to have no excuse to use them - much like a new yellow belt in a Tae Kwon Do class who is eagerly waiting for the school bully to give him an excuse to practice his martial arts. Germany's army and navy swelled in size to protect its empire and homeland, and other nation's reacted accordingly. Germany's military leadership encouraged aggression. Helmuth von Moltke, a high-ranking strategist, declared, "The German people must be made to see that we have to attack because of enemies' provocation. . . . [W]ar must seem like a deliverance from the great armaments, the financial burdens, the political tensions. . . ." (Snyder, 196 0, 377) Germany's participation in the alliance system also helped create the conflict of World War I. Kaiser William II encouraged Francis Joseph to take a firm stand against Serbia. The alliance system affected the nations of Europe and America, too. What should have been a small, localized conflict turned into a deadly contest between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy on one side, and France and Britain (and eventually the US) on the other side (Unger and Unger, 1990, 257). Germany's role in World War I had direct effects on Americans. Unrestricted submarine warfare by the German's helped draw America into the war. Americans on European vessels such as the Sussex and Lusitania would be killed while crossing the Atlantic. (They had been warned not to cross on those European ships, but this detail is often omitted in our national memory). America would be "threatened" from the south as German leaders encouraged Mexico to launch an attack against the US to regain its land lost in the Mexican-American War. The Zimmerman note sought to bring Mexico into the war. Germany forced America to decide between isolationism and a defense of democracy (Unger and Unger, 1990, 145). Likewise, Germany's role in World War II is hard to overstate. They were well-equipped for war, with plenty of material resources and a new leadership that captured public attention. Taking advantage of political instability and a fear of communism, Hitler speeded the rise of the Nazi Party. Concentrating on the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles, the Jewish "problem," and a bad

The Greatest Wealth Is Health

The Greatest Wealth Is Health The greatest wealth is Health. The public nowadays are more concern about their health because health can be consider as an asset for a person. A good health is foundation of better future for a person or a family. In present modern era of technology, public are more educated and knowledgeable. With the easily accessibility of information from the internet, it also helps the public to gain the extra knowledge easily. Thus, there are more aware on their personal health status compare to those days. 14th of November is the World Diabetic day that celebrates worldwide. In authors working hospital there is a plan to organize health screening for community. The purpose of organizing this Diabetic awareness campaign is to highlight the importance of education to protect future health of community and prevent the serious health consequences due to diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that emerging global epidemic. The rapid increase in people with diabetes is due to increasing overeating, obesity, and physically inactivity. Diabetes can be due to the pancreas does not producing enough insulin, or the inability to use the insulin that is produced by pancreas effectively and this leads to high concentration of glucose in the blood. There are three type of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is due to lack of insulin production and type 2 diabetes is due to body unable to produce insulin that needed effectively. Third, gestational diabetes is due to hyperglycemia that is first recognized during pregnancy in a pregnant mother who never had diabetic before. Type 2 diabetes is most common on and usually affects adults. There is a report from WHO (2006), said that type 2 diabetes in children is very rare previously, but it have increased worldwide recently for the newly diagnose cases in children and adolescents. People may live with diabetes for yea rs but diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects the multiple organs such as cardiovascular, kidney, retina and nerve damage. According to World Health Organization (WHO) 2012 statistic reported one in six adults is obese, one in ten for diabetic and one in three has high blood pressure. It was stated in New Straits Times (30 April 2012), Malaysia has one of the worlds highest number of diabetes cases among its population with 2.6 million registered patients. Lack of awareness about diabetes can lead to complication such as blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. The author as a team leader of this Diabetes Awareness campaign is responsible to identify team members to participate in the activities. As when we share a common direction or sense of community, we can get there more quickly and easily as everyone had take part and share the burden and not one-man show to complete everything. As a very familial quote that we always heard The whole is greater than sum of parts. So, effective building is very important to make this Diabetic Awareness campaign work successfully. 2. The Key Component of Effective Team Building Team building is a philosophy of job design in which employees are viewed as a team member instead of as individual worker. It is also means that the selection of a group of peoples with the mix skills that had similar interest to work together for a common objectives. Working together without bringing the personal feeling or interest into the teams, it helps to build synergy between its members. As a result, the work, at hand, gets efficiently done. A team cannot perform well when there are team members who do not focus or are serious about their responsibility of their duty, so the key component of effective team building is very important to achieve the goals and objectives that had been set. According to Rahim, Lim, Madya (2011), with the active participation of each of its member, the objectives of the group are accomplishes by the name of the great team. Besides that, the trust and support one another and respect one anothers individual from a team member also is important. Th ere are six key components of effective teams. a. Clearly state team purpose Team purpose, goals and target is very important information for the team members. Because the team members need to know what is their accomplishment in a team. The purpose, goal and target of a team can defined as the essence of the team also. The team purpose needs to include measurable goals, and the operating guideline. When the team members know the purpose, goal and target of the team clearly, it helps team member have a mindset to accomplish their task. Besides that, it also helps the team member to create a dynamic plan to fill the gaps to achieve the purpose, goal and targets of the team. According to Rhodes (2006), when the team members has a clear understanding on the team purpose and the role they play will achieve a better results. And the team highly focus team is a team which have a clear purpose, vision and clear ways of working. b. Team composition Team composition is a group of people that who will ultimate and be responsible for implementing a project. And it also involved in designing and monitoring it. Having the right team members is an essential component of all team building. Another key principle is having team members that have different skills, knowledge and experiences. Because it will generally leads to more creative and flexible in the project. Besides that, the team members can combined and share their individual knowledge on the specific issues that are needed in the project to complete the task. The purpose is to make use of the existing skills and experience to ensure the project moves forward with the best available knowledge. Every team member needs to be selected because of what it is that they are able to bring to the team. Thus, team members should be chosen based on what it is the need from them and their skills. Favoritism is not encouraged. c. Effective communication Communication is the exchange of ideas and information from one person to another that involve a speaker and a listener. It involved a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver. Communication can be verbal and non-verbal and written. Verbal communication is like words, speech, chatting and so on. Nonverbal communication is like body posture, eye contact, facial expression, appearances and so on. All the team members are from different families and brought up differently. The team members have different cultures. Misunderstanding may occur. So, an effective communication is needed to reduce the misunderstanding among the team members. Another communication is written communication, is like newsletters, status reports, meetings, emails, letter, memo, forum and any other collaboration tools. This can be using to communicate among the team members and update the latest information especially if the interval between the next meeting and the present meeting too lon g. An effective and consistent communication is the most important trait of a successful team. Communication need to be clear while communicating to make sure a clear directive to team members. None of the other traits can occur without communication as information cannot be cascaded to and from the team leader and the team members. Thus, communication is very important to form an effective team. d. Active participation In an ineffective group, we will see some members do not perform fully up to expectations; some are too self-centered; some are too sensitive and temperamental; some are burned out; and some are just cannot get along with others. So, the team leader hold an important role to ensure all the team members participate and contribute to the team in achieving the goal and objective of the team. Brainstorming is usually used for solving the problem. Brainstorming is best when people feel free to present their ideas without the fear of the brunt of organizational politics or being judged, and also when there are no inhibitions. Brainstorming can be one of the most creative methods of solving any problem as it will make people think out of the box. According to a study Psychological Effects of Brainstorming by Pronin, Jacobs Wegner (2008),Velagapudi (2012) , the effects of thought speed on mood are partially rooted in the subjective experience of thought speed. This will results in joy-enhan cing effects of fast thinking. This will create a positive or conducive of environment for team members also. e. Active plan Active plan is one of the effective key components in effective team. The active plan is made and agreed upon by the team members. Hence, the team members have the same goal and same direction to accomplish the task. Besides that, it also includes feedback from the team members especially when making the team decisions. f. Ongoing assessment and evaluation This is a process that will be consistently running to assess the progress of the team. And this is to make sure the progress still within the direction of the goal. Besides that, the excellent staff will be awarded such as put in the credit in the appraisal. Certificate or souvenir can be given as a token of appreciation at the end of the project. While there is the failure during the ongoing progress, special coaching will be given to guide and to overcome the weakness. 3. The Author utilized the key components of effective team building for the Diabetic Awareness Campaign as below: a. Clear state team purpose A clear team purpose and goal need to be developed as this can work wonders for organization development. Goals and plans provide a sense of direction that focus on the specific target and direct the team members towards important outcomes. Besides that, the goal that set need to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound. For example, the specific goal is organize a Diabetic awareness campaign to create the awareness for the community on the diabetic health care to the hospital area. The goal is measurable as it will be held on 17th of November this year in author working hospital main lobby and the estimated participants will be 200 persons from 9a.m until 12 midday. The goal is achievable as the author and other team members will print notices and send to the residents who stay nearby to inform them about this activity. The goal is realistic as the team members have various skills and knowledge to accomplish the objective. The author and other team members will book and check all instruments a day before the exact day. b. Team composition It is important to determine the team member in the team. The selection is according to the team projects and not nepotism. Because it involves how the team members work to achieve the team goal with using their knowledge and their skills. For example, in this Diabetic Awareness campaign, author require the health educator, diabetic nurse for giving the health education, dietitian for diet advice, physiotherapist teaching the exercise, 8 staff nurses for checking the blood glucose and blood pressure. And 4 assistance nurses are needed for the taking participants abdominal girth, weight and height of the participants, 4 ward aides to usher and to register the participants. And author has 4 team members to standby and to take over the staffs when they need to have a short rest while the campaign is on. c. Effective communication Communication can be considered as a most important factor in successful teamwork. Without communication, nothing can be done. Besides that, thrust is develops through frequent and meaningful interaction and communication. According to Henmen (2011), healthy teamwork depends on the ability of the participants to give accurate feedback to each other, even when the feedback is negative. The negative feedback is like when a team member suggests buying the extra glucometer for the poor family, although the idea is good but due to the budget constraint, this will be a negative feedback. There are five tips to make the effective communication. First, during the communication, the languages that uses need to be clear and concise. Second, the information to be delivered need to be complete. To avoid missing important information all the information can be written down on the paper. Third, the communication needs to be in conversational tone because it invites interaction and if in confrontat ion tone, it invites argument. Forth, to make sure the voice and the words is clear so that messages can pass correctly. Fifth, always considerate of other team members feeling and pinpoint the issues and not the person. d. Active participation Encouraging the team members to be active in participation in discussion or brain storming is one of the team leaders tasks. As a team leader, author gives encouragement and motivation in participation of the team members. Recognition will be given to those who had outstanding performance on the task assigned. For example, give a word of well done and give recognition in front all the team members. And also will give recognition for those who have consistency on their task and have the responsibilities and commitment on the task given. Author also will give recognition for the team member who works hard to increase their performance and demonstrate progress. Because as a human being, people feel pride in their works and also care about what the superiors and peers think of their accomplishments. Author also will respects and empower the team member on their task. When the team member is empowered, they feel the ownership of the assigned task and will try their best to perform well. B esides that, it creates a greater sense of responsibility among team members. And the team members will feel enthusiastic in performing the task too. Next, is to trust the team members ability on handling the task that had assigned to them. Thrust is the strong force that binds the atoms of the team. (Preston,2005). e. Active plan During the meeting, open discussion in English or Bahasa Malaysia will be used to prevent misunderstanding. The team goal identified in the earlier part will be the priority. For example, the discussion on the goal or problems can include brainstorming for solution. The team members will understand each individual task. During discussion, the team member can have better coordination of individual skills and able to share their responsibilities also. Follow up session will be made for those who fail or have problem Sometimes, there will have some disagreement in the team because not all peoples have the same ideas and thinking. At this time, looking at the priority of the tasks and the consensus among the team member is important in making the decision of a task. Open debate will be using to rule out the pros and cons of the related issue. Besides that, democratic leadership will be used. Decision must be agreeable by the majority. As a team leader, the author will schedule meetings when everyone will attend. Besides that, author also will plan the dates of meetings and team member will be informed. The meetings will be held once a week. This is to reduce the risk of the team member not able to attend meetings. The attendance of team members is important especially while making the team decision. A mechanism also will develop to inform the meeting minutes and decisions especially for those team member that are unable to attend such as email, hard copy and so on. This is to make sure every team members has the chance in the consensus of making the decision for the team. f. Ongoing assessment and evaluation The works of the team member need to be assessed. This is to ensure team members are in the right track, not slow in progress and not meeting difficulties. The team members are also advised to give feedback on the task or difficulties they have met. Besides that, gathering the feedback is also important because the feedback may help to improve the job. If there is a failure, an audit team needs to come in to do the assessment to rule the failure. At the end of the campaign, the entire team member will need to do an evaluation for program. Author will take this opportunity to acknowledge the team member that had done well on their work. And also will discuss on the skills that could be improved. Besides that, to assess on the job satisfaction on the team members to make a plan that author could be improve in effective team building. 4. Conclusion As a conclusion, in high-performance team, the team members are co-operatives rather than competitive. The team member are supporting one another and work towards with hand in hand to reach the common goal rather than being divisive. Thus, the six key components are very essential to form effective teams and get the outcome as plan. (2802 words)

Abraham Lincoln and Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel that was written by Mark Twain. The novel was published in 1884 in England and a year later in the United States. The book chronicles the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a boy running away from being â€Å"sivilized† and Jim, a runaway slave. The book follows them as they travel down the Mississippi River. As the novel progresses and Jim and Huck become closer friends, we begin to see Huck’s inner struggle. He is torn between two different moral commitments- to the slave society he has grown up in and his friendship with Jim.Huck has been trained to tolerate and support slavery, and his friendship with Jim enables him to see the injustice of the institution. Completing my part of the PIOP, Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, enabled me to see the similarities in the beliefs of Abraham Lincoln and Huck. Both grew up in a time and place where slavery was considered acceptable and racism was ever-present. As the two grew up, or in Huck’s case spent time with a slave, their views began to gradually change. It took Lincoln a while longer to believe that slavery was morally wrong, but for most of his life he advocated for the abolishment of slavery. My part of the project gave me an opportunity to research one of the greatest reformers, orator, and president this country has ever seen. Abraham Lincoln’s humble beginnings in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky gave him the ability to empathize with the common man and those less fortunate than him. From the beginning of his political career until his assassination, Abraham Lincoln advocated for the abolishment of slavery, at first saying it would benefit the United States economically and then on the basis that it was morally wrong. Even though his point of view made him unpopular in the South, he was still elected president in 1860.Abraham Lincoln being president guaranteed slaves and free blacks that they had someone on their side; s omeone to advocate on their behalf. When southern states began to secede from the Union and the Civil War broke out, Lincoln was presented with an opportunity to free the slaves once and for all as a war tactic. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in rebellious states. Although Lincoln maintained that his duty was to â€Å"save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery,† emancipation is argued as one of his greatest achievements.Lincoln was the first president to combat the issue of slavery head-on. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t as work as well as he hoped, it paved the way for the passage of Amendment 13 which outlawed slavery in the United States. Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn twenty years after the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Slavery had been abolished and the North and South were somewhat getting along. Why would Twain publish a novel about morals about an institution that was no longer in place? Legally, blacks and whites were equal, but there was still a problem with racism.

Eng225 Final Paper Film Critique

Running Head:   Film Critique Critique of The Blind Side Tabitha Teasley Eng. 225 Introduction to Film Deborah Cunningham July 13, 2012 Critique of The Blind Side The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become. The Blind Side is based on Micheal Lewis book called, The Blind Side:   Evolution of a game. In this film this young man had a bad life at first. His talents and give him opportunity to had a good ending in life. It do not matter what a person had to go through in life, because it only that one opportunity to make a life time change. This movie involved a boy who was poor and uneducated. He had a bad beginning, but a recruited seen his talents and gave him the chance. Sometime it take someone else to see the talent another person is working with in life. In this film it takes the film director the props, and the lighting to tell this story. As this paper take the story one scene at a time, it will show who it take all element together and it will show that it do not matter how a person start in life. Storytelling is very important in the film world today. Each movie has to start with a story.A story is â€Å"a   narrative; all the elements and events that characters experience, whether before, during, or after the plot that is depicted in a book or a movie† (Film: From Watching to Seeing, 2011) Sometimes the person who wrote the script, will be the director also. If this do not happen, â€Å"it take the writers, producers, the director, and the actors, to put the story into action† (Film: From Watching to Seeing). The storytelling has to have a good story for it to make it to the film world. The director for   this movie is John Lee Hancock. The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who become an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family† (The Internet Movie Database). The storyteller for the   book â€Å"The Bli nd Side† is Michael Lewis. Critique of The Blind Side â€Å"Lewis today might be the most insider-ish outsider writer alive†(Maine Living, 2011 ). He was raised in New Orleans. He learn is life the â€Å"success and happiness are very different things, never become a lawyer, and you do not need a come from a bookish environment to know how to spin a helluva story† (Maine Living, 2011). The Blind Side expresses a similar theme of how value often is misjudged and overlooked. The improbable true story of how a young, African-American athlete born to a crack-addicted mother was adopted by a rich, evangelical Christian family, it was turned into a popular film featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Sandra Bullock†( Maine Living, 2011). This is a true story about Michael Oher. â€Å"He play for the Baltimore Ravens now† (NPR). He had a very hard childhood. He was a black male who had to start from scratch after being adopt by a family, who had a daughte r† (NPR).He had no identifying documents, school records, or anything that would demonstrate on paper that he existed. â€Å"His whole life changed when his adoptive mom gave him responsibility†(NPR). When a person is bought into a environment that they are not accompany with, it is hard to adopt to the change. For example when the family took him shopping for some clothes, he did not know how to receive them, because he was not used to someone going shopping just for him. Acting is what make the movie come to life. In the textbook, Film: From Watching to Seeing, it states, â€Å"Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it made†. The actor job is to act. They pretends to be the character in the movie. They have to learn their lines and they have to connect with the character they are pretending to be in the film. The starting actor in the movie â€Å"Blind Side† is Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock, and Tim McGraw. Critique of The Blind Sid e Aaron was born on August 15, 1984 in Bronx, New York (IMDB). â€Å"His acting began with a Christmas play†(IMDB). He played the character of Michael Oher. He stated that to get ready for this character he had to â€Å"work out twice a day, seven days a week, and he had to loss weight† (IMDB).Sometime actors had to change their appearance to fit the character they got to play. The actors are very important to the movie world. When the movie first came on   it told the story about   Micheal Oher. This allowed the audience to know about the role the character (Quinton Aaron) played. It was on a football field and the point the director wanted the audience focus on was light and the background was dark. When the narrator wanted the audience to focus on a scene the scene stopped while the narrator talked about the scene. The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become. â€Å"Cinematography is the process of photographing motion†( Film: From Watching To Seeing). â€Å"The cinematographer's job is to translate the director's vision for the film, to capture what the director wants to see and to say, and to physically make that happen† (Film: From Watching To Seeing). This is what determines how the audience sees the movie. In the movie â€Å"The Blind Side† the cinematographer used medium long shots and medium close ups. In the scene called â€Å"sleep tight† this   is the shots they used.In this scene the lady was making him a place to sleep at for over night. Medium Long Shot is â€Å"human figures are visible between head-to-toe and head-to-knee in the frame†. Medium close- up is â€Å"human figures are visible head to neck†(Film: From Watching To Seeing). The lighting had a dark background. The lighting was lighter on the area that audiences needed the focus to be on. Critique of The Blind Side Editing is what â€Å"controls what views will see and when the will see it and can profoundly affect how they will interpret a film. It establishes and can manipulate the pacing of s story on the screen. It can assemble a serious of partial details, creating by skillful arrangement the illusion of complete actions and spaces that exist only in the mind of the viewers† (Film: From Watching To Seeing). The movie â€Å"The Blind Side was done in Chronological order. Chronological order makes the movie easy to follow. â€Å" It make the scene unfold one after another, from beginning to end† (Film: Watching To Seeing). Editing is very important to the film world. This is what allow them to put the final touch on the film. They clean the film up so the story can be told. The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become. The sound is also important to the film world. There are three basic categories of film sound. They are dialogue, sound effects, and music. They all have to have balance between the three. Dialogue is â €Å"when the characters talking to one another in the films†. (Film: From Watching To Seeing). Sound effects are used to get the audiences attention. It help draw them into the movie. In the scene â€Å"he's changing Mine†Ã‚   the sound was low and the music was very soft in the background. There were four ladies sitting down eating and they were discussing her adopting the boy. The way the music and the low tone voice kept the focus on the characters. In this movie the sound kept the movie on the serious side. This movie had sounds that would show the sadden and the happy point of it. This was very important in this movie. If the sound be off key, then the movie would not get it point across. They did a good job with the sound and music in this film. It help get the point across with the main point of the movie; The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become.Critique of The Blind Side Directing and style is very important in the movie w orld also. Each director has their own styles. Sometimes the styles maybe black and white, back in the days, and modern days films. In â€Å"The Blind Side† the style were modern days. The choice of which film making techniques to use, and how and when to use them, can define a director's personal style† (Film† Watching To Seeing). The genre for the movie â€Å"The Bind Side† is drama, comedy, sports. I think this fits the movie well. The genre is important because it lets the audience know what to expect in the movie. It described the movies and it allowed the main point of the movie, the way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become, to be told on time. Movies can have a positive effect on society or a negative effect. This movie had a positive effect. In the movie The Blind Side the rating from society was good. The movie encourage people. It let society know your dream can come true. It do not matter what you didn't have in your childhood. Life is what a person make it out to be. Look for opportunity, and expect changes to happen at any giving moment. In the movie the boy was seen as this quiet, fat person. Each person has gifts in life. Sometime a person need someone to help pull their gift to it full potential. This lady could have turned her nose up at the young boy, like society did. She had a gift for helping other and she seen the opportunity to use her gift. The movie also taught society to look at a person heart and not the outside appearance of a person. He had a big heart and the lady seen that society was robbing the young boy of his dream. It also taught society that dreams are made to come true. Stop focusing on what a person do not have and give opportunity when they are suppose to be giving.Critique of The Blind Side When her and her friends was having dinner they were making fun of her adopting the young boy. The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become . A formalist approach is â€Å"to analysis is concerned with film form, or how the basic elements are organized to convey certain meaning†. This deals with the narrative elements. (Film: Watching To Seeing). In the text book, Film: From Watching To Seeing, it states â€Å"the most important thing to remember about film criticism is that any film can be viewed from a variety of perspectives. It may succeed at some and fail at others, but cannot be simply dismissed because the viewer does not like one aspect of it†. Each person will have their own personal conclusion on how they rate a movie. What one may like the next person will dislike. Two people can watch a movie together and each person will have their own points about the movie. It will mean this to one and some completely different to the next person. The point did come across in â€Å"the Blind Side;   the way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become. In the movie â€Å"The Blin d Side† everything the director did to make the movie went in together. It took all part to make the movie a success. This movie set out to encourage people about their dreams. From the director to the shoes the character had on, it took it all. There was a balance in the lighting with the sound to the music. It do not matter how a person started in life or what a person been through, they have gifts and if the right opportunity come, their life can change forever. Look for opportunity and take each one like it is you last. The way a person start in life, will not determine who or what they will become. REFERENCES Goodykoontz, B. , & Jacobs, C. P. (2011).
